Figure 11.1 graphically depicts the Project Management Process Groups associated with each project, whether a stand-alone project or a phase of a program. Five Project Management Process Groups are identified: Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling, and Closing. Each can be distinctly described, and unlike the phases of the project life cycle, there is a tremendous amount of overlap among the Project Management Process Groups. Figure 11.2 illustrates this by plotting the relative amount of process interaction in each Process Group over the course of a notional project timeline. This overlap is due primarily to the iterative processes of planning, execution, and monitoring and controlling (i.e., measuring progress and taking necessary steps to keep the project on track).
